The BMW C1, a revolutionary motorcycle concept that debuted in 2000, was a unique blend of scooter practicality and motorcycle performance. This innovative machine, available in two models - the C1 and the C1 200 - boasted a distinctive design featuring a full-length, transparent, and aerodynamically efficient canopy. This canopy provided protection from wind and rain, akin to a car, but without the bulk and weight. The C1 was marketed as a "safety scooter," incorporating features like a reinforced chassis, crumple zones, a seatbelt, and a rollover bar for increased occupant safety. It also featured a 125cc or 200cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, providing enough power for urban commuting and suburban excursions. However, the C1's unorthodox design, combined with its relatively high price point, ultimately limited its appeal to a niche market. Despite its innovative safety features and unique design, the C1 faced several challenges. The canopy, while providing protection, added weight and complexity, hindering the C1's maneuverability and agility compared to conventional scooters. Additionally, the C1's unorthodox design and features, including the mandatory helmet requirement for riders, were not universally well-received. The C1 was also significantly more expensive than conventional scooters, making it less attractive to budget-conscious buyers. Ultimately, BMW discontinued production of the C1 in 2003 due to disappointing sales figures. However, the C1 remains a significant milestone in motorcycle history, showcasing BMW's willingness to experiment with unconventional designs and push the boundaries of safety in the two-wheeled world.
