The 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora, a luxury sedan that aimed to revitalize the Oldsmobile brand, was a bold statement for General Motors. This was the first car to be built on the new 'G' platform, a unibody structure designed for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The Aurora's sleek, aerodynamic design, a departure from the boxy styling of previous Oldsmobiles, was penned by renowned designer, Dale C. Winner, who also designed the 1992 Cadillac Seville. The Aurora's exterior was characterized by its low, sloping hood, sculpted fender lines, and distinctive, wraparound taillights. Its interior, focusing on comfort and luxury, featured premium leather upholstery, wood accents, and an advanced electronic dashboard, showcasing the company's focus on technology. The Aurora was offered with a powerful 4.0-liter V8 engine that provided ample power and a smooth, refined ride.

The Aurora's innovative features extended beyond its design. It was equipped with a host of advanced technologies, including a four-speed automatic transmission with electronic overdrive, a state-of-the-art anti-lock braking system, traction control, dual airbags, and an optional Bose sound system. At its launch, the Aurora was lauded for its handling, performance, and luxurious interior. However, despite its positive attributes, the Aurora struggled to achieve the sales success GM had hoped for. This was attributed to a number of factors, including its relatively high price point, competition from established luxury brands, and Oldsmobile's declining brand image. The 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora, while a significant milestone for the brand, ultimately failed to revive Oldsmobile's fortunes. It remains a symbol of a time when General Motors was trying to reinvent itself in the face of changing consumer tastes and increasingly fierce competition in the automotive market.
