The Saab 9-5 is a mid-size executive car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab from 1997 to 2011. The first generation, known as the "OG 9-5", was launched in 1997 as a successor to the Saab 9000. It was available in various body styles including a four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon, and a three-door hatchback. The 9-5 was designed to be a premium vehicle, offering high levels of comfort, safety, and performance. It was praised for its distinctive Scandinavian design, its roomy interior, and its handling prowess. The 9-5 incorporated many innovative features for its time, including a unique "Night Panel" that dimmed all non-essential lights for improved night driving, and a "Saab Active Head Restraints" system that helped to reduce whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions.

The 9-5 was also known for its range of powerful and efficient engines, including turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 petrol engines, and a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The 9-5 was offered with both manual and automatic transmissions, and featured a sophisticated all-wheel drive system called "Saab XWD" in later models. The 9-5's reputation as a reliable and well-built car was reinforced by the introduction of the "Saab Aero" trim level, which offered even more powerful engines and sportier styling. While the OG 9-5 was a significant success for Saab, facing competition from established players like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the car struggled to maintain its market share as the brand faced financial difficulties in the late 2000s. The introduction of the second-generation 9-5 (launched in 2010) was a last-ditch effort to revive the brand, but ultimately it was not enough to save Saab from bankruptcy in 2011.
