The Subaru Alcyone SVX, produced from 1991 to 1997, was a bold and unique departure for the Japanese automaker, aiming to capture a slice of the luxury grand touring market. This two-door coupe was named the Alcyone SVX in Japan, while the name was simply shortened to SVX for the rest of the world. The Alcyone name had previously been used for the Subaru XT coupe, a more sporty predecessor with less luxurious aspirations. The SVX, however, boasted a distinctive, aerodynamically sculpted body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, renowned for his work with Italian supercar maker, Italdesign. The SVX featured a large, curved windshield, a rear hatch design unique to the time, a distinctive, prominent grille, and a sleek, low profile. It was the first Subaru to feature a 2+2 seating arrangement, with two small rear seats designed more for occasional use than practicality.

Under the hood, the SVX was powered by a 3.3-liter, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, nicknamed the "EZ30" engine, producing 226 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque. The engine was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears, and front-wheel drive. While the SVX offered decent performance, it was not intended to be a track-day car. It instead aimed for a more comfortable and luxurious driving experience. The SVX featured a sophisticated suspension system and a well-appointed interior with standard leather seats, a premium audio system, and a unique dashboard design. However, the SVX was ultimately a commercial failure, with sales hampered by its high price tag, limited practicality, and issues with the reliability of its complex engine design. Despite its shortcomings, the SVX remains a fascinating and unique chapter in Subaru's history, and a reminder of the manufacturer's willingness to push boundaries and explore new segments.
