The FSO Polonez was a compact car produced by the Polish state-owned automotive manufacturer Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych (FSO) from 1978 to 2002. It was the first Polish-designed mass-produced passenger car, and it quickly became a ubiquitous sight on Polish roads. The initial design, known as the "Polonez 1500," was based on the Fiat 125p, utilizing its front-mounted, rear-wheel drive configuration. It featured a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 70 horsepower. The Polonez 1500 underwent several revisions over the years, including the introduction of a 1.3-liter engine variant (the "Polonez 1300") and a diesel engine option.

The Polonez was a versatile car, offered in various body styles including a saloon, estate, and a pick-up truck. While it became a staple in Poland, it also found its way to numerous other countries, particularly within the Soviet bloc. Its rugged durability and practicality proved popular, especially in countries with less than ideal road conditions. Despite its long production run and success in the Polish market, the Polonez faced several challenges. The car's outdated design, coupled with increasingly stringent emissions regulations, eventually hampered its competitiveness. By the late 1990s, FSO attempted to modernize the Polonez with the introduction of the "Polonez Caro" model, featuring a redesigned front end and interior. However, this update could not revive the car's fortunes, and production finally ceased in 2002, marking the end of an era for Polish automotive manufacturing.
