The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (internal designation W251) is a luxury crossover SUV that was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 2005 to 2012. It was the first vehicle in its segment to offer seating for six or seven passengers in a three-row configuration. The R-Class was positioned as a grand tourer, emphasizing comfort and spaciousness over off-road capabilities.
The W251 R-Class was available with a range of powerful engines, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrains. The petrol engines ranged from the 3.5 L V6 to the 5.5 L V8, while the diesel options included a 3.0 L V6 and a 3.2 L V6. The hybrid variant, launched in 2009, combined a 3.5 L V6 petrol engine with an electric motor. The R-Class offered an array of features and technologies, including a 7-speed automatic transmission, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, various trim levels, and a comprehensive selection of safety features. Despite its innovative design and features, the R-Class struggled to find commercial success. It faced stiff competition from established luxury SUVs and crossovers, and its unique body style did not resonate with a wide audience. The W251 R-Class was discontinued in 2012, and was not directly replaced by a successor model. However, Mercedes-Benz has since expanded its SUV lineup with models like the GLE and GLS, which offer similar versatility and spaciousness, but with a more conventional design.
