The BMW R850 R and R850C, launched in 2003, were air-cooled, boxer-twin motorcycles that represented BMW's approach to the naked and cruiser segments respectively. The R850 R, a successor to the highly acclaimed R1100R, was a sport-touring machine with a sharp, aggressive design. It featured a low-slung frame, a telescopic front fork, and a single-sided swingarm, all contributing to its sporty handling and rider engagement. Power came from an 850cc air-cooled boxer-twin engine producing 77 hp, making it a lively performer for both city riding and weekend adventures. The R850R offered a comfortable riding position with a spacious seat and easy-to-reach controls, making it a great choice for long-distance touring. On the other hand, the R850C was BMW's foray into the cruiser market, a segment they were relatively new to. It sported a more laid-back riding position with a low seat height, swept-back handlebars, and forward-mounted footpegs. The design featured a classic cruiser aesthetic with a raked front end, spoked wheels, and a low-slung profile. However, unlike typical American cruisers, it retained BMW's signature boxer engine, providing a unique blend of performance and character. Despite its different styling, the R850C shared the same engine and mechanicals as the R850 R, offering a comfortable and reliable ride with a distinctive character. Both models offered a level of quality and engineering that was synonymous with the BMW brand, appealing to discerning riders looking for a well-rounded and capable motorcycle experience.
