The Mazda Protege 5, launched in 2002, was a compact hatchback that marked a significant shift in Mazda's design philosophy. This sleek and sporty five-door model replaced the previous generation Protege sedan and wagon, offering a more dynamic and youthful alternative in the competitive compact car market. Built on a shortened platform of the Mazda3, the Protege 5 featured a distinctive, almost coupe-like profile, accentuated by its sloping roofline and prominent rear window. The car was available in three trim levels: the base i, the sporty S, and the upscale ES, each offering a unique blend of features and performance. Under the hood, the Protege 5 housed a 1.6L four-cylinder engine, producing 110 hp in the i and ES models, and a peppier 1.8L four-cylinder engine in the S model, with a power output of 130 hp. Both engines were paired with a five-speed manual transmission as standard, with an optional four-speed automatic available across all trims.

The Protege 5 was lauded for its nimble handling, thanks in part to its independent suspension all around. The car also received positive feedback for its spacious and comfortable interior, featuring a well-designed dashboard and ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. Safety was prioritized, with standard features including dual front airbags, side airbags, and ABS brakes. While the Protege 5 was not initially available with a full-blown performance package, a limited edition “Mazdaspeed Protege 5” emerged in 2004, boasting a turbocharged engine with 170 hp and a sport-tuned suspension. This model aimed to capitalize on the growing demand for affordable performance hatchbacks and further solidified the Protege 5's reputation as a fun and stylish compact car. Despite its success, the Protege 5 was discontinued in 2003, leaving its mark as a stylish and practical compact hatchback that offered both affordability and a sporty driving experience.
